Avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity

May 6, 2023

Avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity. These injuries can be quite common in younger dogs between 4-8 months of age. In Benji’s case he also had displacement and separation of the proximal growth plate. This was causing his joint angle to tilt backwards. We have used several pins and a tension-band wire to pull this back down and at the same time securing the tibial tuberosity. He is already doing really well but we my have to remove his implants in a few weeks as he is quite young with further growth potential. Remember if you have a lame puppy, don’t delay seeing the vet. Injuries in young animals can be associated with growth plate injuries. Prompt and appropriate treatment can be essential.
